Subrata Pal: Career so far
Subrata Pal is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Indian Super League (ISL) team Hyderabad FC. He is a graduate of the Tata Football Academy. In 2004, he began his professional career with Mohun Bagan. Subrata played only one game in three years at Mohun Bagan.
In 2007, Subrata was signed by Mohun Bagan’s fierce local rivals, East Bengal. He was a crucial player for the team during the next 2 years. He was considered the best goalkeeper of the I-League in 2007 due to his brilliant shot-stopping abilities. Subrata also helped East Bengal win the 2007 Federation Cup. As a result, East Bengal played in the AFC Cup 2008. He made 31 appearances in the league for the Kolkata based club over two seasons.
Subrata joined Pune FC in June 2009. He played 40 times for the club over 3 seasons and even scored 1 goal. During the middle of his first season at Pune FC, Subrata appeared for a trial at Canadian MLS team, Vancouver Whitecaps FC. However, it was not a successful trial for Subrata. After 3 seasons, Subrata left Pune FC for Prayag United appearing 15 times in the 2012-13 season. Due to a poor finish to the season for Subrata, he was sent out on loan to Rangdajied United where he played 6 times.
In early 2014, Danish Superliga club FC Vestsjælland confirmed that they had signed Subrata Pal. In the process, Subrata became the 4th Indian footballer to play abroad at the professional level, the 2nd Indian footballer to join a top flight European team, and the 1st Indian goalkeeper to play abroad. In spite of signing on as member of the squad, he did not make even a single appearance for the first team and only appeared with the reserve team of the club.
In the inaugural ISL season, Mumbai City FC drafted in Subrata. He was the first-choice goalkeeper for the club until 2015, making 26 appearances in the league. He went out on loan to Salgaocar FC in 2015 where he appeared 15 times for the Goan outfit. Subrata played the 2016 ISL season with NorthEast United FC after which he joined DSK Shivajians where he played 24 times.
In July 2017, Jamshedpur FC selected Subrata in the 2017 ISL Draft for the 2017-18 ISL season. Subrata was awarded the ISL Golden Glove Award. He appeared 43 times for the Jharkhand based club. On 1st August 2020, he joined Hyderabad FC on a free transfer.
