Salgaocar FC: History of the club

Salgaocar FC is an Indian professional football club based in Vasco, Goa. Its owners are V. M. Salgaocar Group of Companies. 1956 was the founding year of Salgaocar FC. According to the owners, the purpose of establishing the club was to provide a platform to the Goan youth to demonstrate their ability to the nation, and to the world. Salgaocar’s home games are played at Fatorda Stadium and the Tilak Maidan Stadium.
In the year 1962, Salgaocar became the first team from Goa to receive an invite to participate in the esteemed Durand Cup in New Delhi. Throughout their history, Salgaocar won all possible domestic trophies available thereby carving their name amongst the country’s best teams. They won the National Football League in 1998-99, the I-League in 2010-11, the Federation Cup in 1988,1989, 1997 and 2011, the Indian Super Cup in 1998 and 1999 and the Durand Cup in 1999, 2003 and 2014. Salgaocar have won the State Championships of Goa for 19 times which is a record. In 1999 and 2001, Salgaocar also won the Governor’s Cup. The club is one of the 12 original clubs in the inaugural National Football League. The last few years may be viewed as glory years seem far away. Relegation, a successful promotion, and then again relegation has left the Salgaocar faithful shattered. In June 2016, Salgaocar FC released an official statement expressing its desire to pull out from the I-League ahead of the 2016-17 season citing the All India Football Federation’s prejudice against I-League.
The home kit of Salgaocar is green top, white shorts and socks. The away kit of the club is all red. Salgaocar FC also have a youth academy where its youth teams take part in Youth I-Leagues from U13 level to U18 level. In addition to a youth academy, the club have school partnerships and grassroot programmes.
